Safety culture

Safety culture occurs when a work environment shares values and beliefs about workplace safety and health, influences actions and drives practices for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. Prioritizing workplace safety helps prevent workplace injuries and illnesses for a lifetime.

A strong safety culture exists when:

  • safety and health hazards and concerns are addressed
  • leaders demonstrate a commitment to safety and health
  • trust and respect are prominent in the work environment
  • each person in the organization is personally invested and accountable for safety and health
  • the work environment is inclusive, regardless of role or background
  • continuous learning is a feature of the organization

Safety culture assessment

Our safety culture assessment is an easy-to-complete tool comprised of 12 questions to help assess your organization’s workplace safety culture. It is relevant to all sectors and organizational sizes and is able to track change over time.

The assessment should be completed by the person who is most knowledgeable about the workplace’s safety and health program and practices. Studies reveal that this individual provides the most accurate reporting for each of the questions, but that doesn’t mean anybody can’t give it a try.

Download and complete the safety culture assessment to find out how your workplace’s safety culture is doing.
