Powered mobile equipmentThe Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (WSH Regulation) defines powered mobile equipment as a self-propelled machine or combination of machines, including a prime mover or vehicle, used to manipulate or move material, move workers or provide a powered aerial device for workers. Specifically, Part 22 of the WSH Regulation outlines safety requirements related to powered mobile equipment (e.g., forklifts, powered lift trucks, concrete pump trucks, dump trucks). There are also specific requirements for powered lift trucks, concrete pump trucks, dump trucks and working on ice.An employer must develop and carry out safe work procedures for using powered mobile equipment in the workplace, train workers in those safe work procedures and ensure that workers comply.An employer must ensure that powered mobile equipment is inspected by a competent person for defects and unsafe conditions as often as necessary to ensure the equipment is in safe operating condition and in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Any defects must be reported and addressed before allowing trained workers to operate the equipment.
