PlatformsIn Manitoba, there are several types of platforms that are used to support workers, materials and equipment above ground level. As noted in Part 28 – Scaffolds and Other Elevated Work Platforms in the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (WSH Regulation), workers must be trained and familiarized with the inspection, application and operation of a platform, including recognizing and avoiding hazards associated with its operation, before they can operate an elevated platform. All operators must be able to demonstrate competence in operating an elevated platform. The owner should permanently keep a complete and concise record of regular inspections (daily inspections exempted), tests, maintenance and structural inspections and electronic and machine repairs that directly affect the elevated platform’s safety. Where the platform’s owner is also the supplier (the rental company), this record should be made available to the employer (the renter). The manufacturer must provide each elevated platform with an appropriate manual. The manual must be kept with the equipment at all times.Elevating work platforms should not be loaded in excess of their rated loads or loaded/used in a manner that affects stability or endangers workers.Examples of elevated work platforms include:aerial devices and self-elevating work platformsself-propelled boom supported elevating work platformsself-propelled elevating work platformsportable elevating work platformsvehicle-mounted aerial devicesladder trucks and tower trucksextensible and articulating boom platformsmast-climbing work platformsvehicle-mounted bridge inspection and maintenance deviceslift truck-mounted work platformsOther standards that apply to elevated platforms include:CAN/CSA Standard-B354.1-04, Portable Elevating Work PlatformsCAN/CSA Standard-B354.2-01 (R2-6), Self-propelled Elevating Work PlatformsCAN/CSA Standard-B354/4-02, Self-propelled Boom-Supported Elevating Work PlatformsCSA Standard C225-00 (R2005), Vehicle-Mounted Aerial DevicesLegislationThe Workplace Safety and Health Act and associated regulations are in place to protect the safety and health of workers in Manitoba.
