MSI training and education

Employers are responsible for developing their own training and safety and health programs. An effective program includes eleven elements:

  1. A policy that demonstrates your commitment.
  2. Adequate systems to identify and control hazards.
  3. Identifies people, resources and procedures that are needed to deal with emergencies.
  4. A statement of responsibilities.
  5. Scheduled regular planned inspections.
  6. Plans to control chemical and biological hazards.
  7. Procedures to control hazards when working with contracted employers and self-employed persons.
  8. Training plans for workers and supervisors.
  9. Procedures to investigate incidents.
  10. Ways to involve workers in the program.
  11. Regular evaluation.

Once you’ve created safety and health programs, you can develop training with your team. Training should be re-evaluated whenever new equipment, tools or techniques are introduced and should always:

  • show employees how to use equipment, including PPE, properly.
  • demonstrate and reinforce safe movements.
  • provide regular hands-on training.

Tips

  • Involve workers in the design of the training program. Their experiences can help illustrate the principles to be learned.
  • On-the-job training is preferred over classroom training. However, both can be effective in combination.
  • Use technology, such as audiovisual equipment and computers, to illustrate principles. Technology provides opportunities for learners to visualize.
  • Content should be tailored to meet the target group’s specific needs and learning requirements. For example, the presentation should be adjusted to meet the needs of non-English speakers.
