Musculoskeletal injuries

On average, 18 Manitobans sustain a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) every day, some of which can be career-ending or life-altering. These injuries impact muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, discs and joints.

An acute injury occurs when the demands of a task abruptly exceed a tissue’s tolerance, with signs and symptoms appearing quickly. A repetitive strain injury is one that develops over days, weeks or months.

 Identify MSI risks

According to the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba, MSIs are attributed with the highest cost of all workplace injuries. Everyone is responsible for contributing to reducing the risk of MSIs in the workplace:

Workers need to be aware of potential health risks related to their jobs and how to effectively prevent them.

Supervisors need to be aware of MSIs, their effects on workers and ensure workers are following proper procedure.

Management needs to be aware of MSI hazards, how these affect the company and the necessity of assigning resources to develop an ergonomics program.

Facility operations personnel must understand ergonomics when designing or changing workstations or purchasing new equipment.

Safety and health committee members must know how to identify problems and evaluate proposed job changes.

Employers must ensure workers understand the control measures put in place.

Know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an MSI so you can adjust your work accordingly. Signs are what you can see, such as swelling or redness, and symptoms are what you can feel, like pain or numbness.

Use the acronym SHARP
S – Swelling
H – Heat
A – Altered function
R – Redness
P – Pain

Take our MSI risk assessment to identify MSI hazards in your workplace and prioritize controls to reduce the risk of sustaining a musculoskeletal injury.
