Cranes

Employers must develop and implement safe work procedures for using cranes and hoists, train workers in the safe work procedures and ensure that workers comply with the safe work procedures.

Workers need to be trained per Part 23 – Cranes and Hoists of The Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (WSH Regulation) when using these items in the workplace. Only those who are authorized to practice the trade of crane and hoist operator under the Trade of Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator Regulation are allowed to operate a mobile crane with a rated load of 7,300 kg or more, a boom truck hoist with a rated load of 7,300 kg or more or a tower crane.

The Applicable Standards section of Part 23 in the WSH Regulation states that an employer and a supplier must ensure that a commercially manufactured crane or hoist is designed, constructed, erected, used, maintained, examined, inspected, operated and repaired in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and the applicable requirements of the following standards:

  • CSA Standard W178.1-14, Certification of Welding Inspection Organizations
  • CSA Standard W178.2-14, Certification of Welding Inspectors
  • CAN/CSA Standard-B167-16, Safety Standard for Maintenance and Inspection of Overhead Cranes, Gantry Cranes, Monorails, Hoists and Trolleys
  • CSA Standard C22.2 NO. 33-M1984 (R2014), Construction and Test of Electric Cranes and Hoists
  • CAN/CSA Standard-Z150-16, Safety Code on Mobile Cranes
  • CAN/CSA Standard-Z185-M87 (R2016), Safety Code for Personnel Hoists
  • CAN/CSA Standard-Z248-17, Code for Tower Cranes
  • CAN/CSA Standard-Z256-M87 (R2016) Safety Code for Material Hoists

Employers and suppliers must ensure that cranes that are not commercially manufactured are:

  • designed by a professional engineer in accordance with the applicable requirements of the standards set out above
  • certified by a professional engineer
  • constructed, erected, used, maintained, examined, inspected, operated and repaired in accordance with the professional engineer’s requirements
