Manitoba Safety and Health Index – PreventionInjury and illness prevention is all about creating safe and healthy workplaces. This requires a proactive, systematic and organized approach to spot workplace hazards, assess risks and find safer ways to do the work every day. Prevention should be incorporated into all aspects of workplace operations and daily activities. The metrics that fall under the Prevention component are: Perception of workplace prevention activitiesThis metric measures Manitobans’ perception of workplace prevention activities such as safety and health training, hazard identification and control within their own workplaces. These activities when implemented within workplaces can help prevent workplace illnesses and injuries. Promoting open communication and awareness and encouraging participation in these activities ensure that workers understand the importance of safety and health within their workplace and supports injury and illness prevention.Data source: SAFE Work Annual Survey Desired direction: +1 i.e. increase in focus on injury and illness prevention activities by Manitoba workplaces Perception of workplace safety supportThis metric measures Manitobans’ perception of available supports and resources such as tools, equipment and hazard communication materials which will help determine how strong workplace safety support is. Workers must feel that they are supported and know where to find the necessary tools they need for a safe work environment. Workers that feel dismissed when they bring safety concerns forward or even worse, not knowing who to bring their safety concerns is a problem.Data source: SAFE Work Annual Survey Desired direction: +1 i.e. improved size and quality of available safety and health resources and support in the workplaces Percentage of total payroll that is SAFE Work CertifiedThis metric measures the percentage of WCB covered payroll that is SAFE Work Certified (SWC). The SWC Program is built around the essential of leadership commitment, hazard identification and risk control, and worker participation. Employers who are SWC have a comprehensive and robust safety and health program. In principle, the more the number of employers who are SWC, more the overall safety and health of Manitobans improves.Data source: Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba Desired direction: +1 i.e. increase in the proportion of SAFE Work Certified payroll within the ProvinceRelated links
