Research and Workplace Innovation Program

RWIP 2019 Call for Applications

Working with its partners, the WCB promotes safe and healthy workplaces, facilitates recovery and return to work, provides compassionate and supportive compensation services for workers and employers, and ensures responsible financial stewardship.  As part of this commitment, the WCB has created the Research and Workplace Innovation Program (RWIP) to promote and fund scientific research, workplace innovation, training and education projects and knowledge transfer related to prevention of occupational injuries, diseases and return to work of injured or ill workers.

RWIP Projects are funded under three (3) streams:

  • Scientific Research
  • Training and Education
  • Workplace Innovation 

Generally, each project would be up to two years in duration and funded up to a maximum of $100,000 each year. A total of $1 million is available to fund qualified projects.


To be considered for funding, all applications must be received by the WCB no later than 4:00 p.m. CST on the closing dates shown below.

Scientific Research Priorities

1. Improving Return to Work (RTW) and Disability Management (DM) Services and Outcomes

The WCB is committed to improving the value of RTW and to ensure injured workers have a timely return to health and safe and suitable work. Of particular interest under this priority are the following topics:

  • Analysis of gaps in understanding the meaning of suitable, modified and alternate duties by employers and workers;

  • Developing a tool-kit and job-bank of modified duties or tasks by industry sector to assist employers select from a variety of suitable jobs that could be performed by an injured worker.  Research targeting manufacturing for example would be of particular interest because technological innovations are continuously changing the nature of tasks, jobs and work processes in this sector;

  • Challenges of small and medium sized employers in accommodating injured workers RTW and in DM;

  • Analysis of the influence of and effect of injury type, firm size, and industry sector on RTW, worker accommodation and modified and alternate duties;

  • Analysis of practical modules for Vocational Rehabilitation for injured workers to evaluate the fit with planned outcomes of RTW and DM;

  • Assessment of relationships of case managers, employers and workers relative to impacts on claim duration and RTW outcomes.


2. Safe Work in the Manufacturing Sector

The time loss injury rate in the manufacturing sector in 2016, was the third highest after the healthcare and construction sectors. Manufacturing is a highly diverse sector and establishing safety standards can often be challenging. Of particular interest under this priority are the following topics:

  • Evaluation of American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) standards and guidelines in manufacturing to determine if the standards are appropriate to sustain occupational and environmental health in manufacturing worksites;

  • Review of safety standards and threshold level values in manufacturing to identify gaps and or inconsistencies in occupational health and safety;

  • Assessment and review of the implementation of safety standards for machine guarding on the shop floor;

  • Impacts of manufacturing processes on workers' hearing loss, vibration, repetitive motion, exertion, fatigue etc.;

  • Investigation of high incidence of slips, trips and falls in worksites to support injury prevention and safer work practices;

  • Considerations for safety with use of robotics and driverless vehicles on the shop floor;

Research on incidence of eye injuries by occupation and industry sector.

3. Occupational Disease (OD) and Illness

The WCB is interested in Scientific Research studies that focus on:

  • Current gaps in understanding the causes and effects of occupational diseases and exposures and identifying those where there is no data captured;

  • Study of the Attributable Risk of occupational diseases and exposures that indicates the number of cases that would not occur in a population if the risk factors were eliminated; 

  • Strategies, interventions and best practices for prevention of various types of OD  and occupational cancers;

  • Management of various types of OD and occupational cancers claims including treatment, recovery and return to work. 


4. Other Topics within the RWIP Mandate

The WCB will continue to accept applications under the Scientific Research funding stream that are within the mandate of the RWIP but which do not address the 2019 Scientific Research Priorities.
