Hazard alert – safe use of drain cleaning products

Date posted: 2023-11-29

Several serious incidents have occurred recently due to mixing of draining cleaning products. These incidents resulted in one death and many severe injuries. Drain-cleaning products typically contain acids, such as sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid, or bases, such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Mixing drain-cleaning products can result in explosive reactions and the creation of hazardous gases like hydrogen sulphide and chlorine gas. While injuries have occurred from using these products on their own, the severity of injuries can increase significantly when these products are combined. Effects reported to Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health include burns to the skin, eyes and internal lining of the respiratory system.

Prevention measures

Drain cleaning products are useful in certain situations. However, SAFE Work Manitoba reminds employers and workers of their responsibilities, as follows.

Employers must ensure:

  • all hazardous products at the workplace are properly labelled
  • safety data sheets are available for all hazardous products used at the workplace and are readily accessible to workers
  • workers receive the appropriate Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) education and training on proper use, storage, handling and disposal of hazardous products
  • a risk assessment is conducted, safe work procedures are developed, workers are trained on these procedures, manufacturer’s specifications (SDS) are followed and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used when handling these products.

Workers must ensure:

  • they follow safe work procedures developed for the workplace
  • they use all necessary personal protective equipment and devices
