Closing or selling a business

When your business changes, it’s important to contact the WCB.

Whether you are selling a business or closing a WCB account, the steps are similar.

Closing a business

If you close an account with the WCB, you must provide the last date that you paid your workers in Manitoba and the payroll up until that date. You will then receive an account statement to reconcile any monies owing.

Depending on the amount owed to you, your refund method will vary.

  • If the refund is under $10,000, you will receive an automatic payment in the form of a cheque.
  • If the refund is over $10,000, the refund will be audited by our Compliance Department before it is refunded.

Please note that Personal Coverage will be cancelled on the day you contact us, not retroactively to the date your business closed. You will need to contact the Assessment Services Department to cancel your Personal Coverage.

Selling a business

If you sell your business, you must provide the WCB with last date that you paid your workers in Manitoba and the payroll up until that date. You will also need to include purchaser contact information including name, phone number and address. You will then receive an account statement to reconcile any monies owing.

Depending on the amount owed to you, your refund method will vary.

  • If the refund is under $10,000, you will receive an automatic refund in the form of a cheque.
  • If the refund is over $10,000, the refund will be audited by our Compliance Department before it is refunded.

You will also need to request a Disposition of Business Enterprise Certificate from us to confirm that your business has satisfied all requirements with the WCB for the buyer.
