  • The operation of an Indian reserve, which includes all workers of the Indian Band in all capacities, including:
    • Administration
    • Sanitation
    • Police/fire fighters
    • Medical

    Includes coverage for work conducted both on and off the reserve.

    (For information on coverage for Treaty Indians, please refer to Appendix “F” – Firms Owned by Indians/Work on Reserves of the administrative guidelines for WCB Policy 35.20.10, Classification of Employers into Industry Sectors and Sub-Groups.)

  • If an Indian band that operates in a mandatory industry (other than operating the Reserve) and if the majority of the work is conducted:
    • off the reserve, then coverage is mandatory.
    • on the reserve, then coverage is optional

    The activity is assigned to the industry classification that best reflects that activity.

  • If a firm is primarily owned by Indian bands and/or Treaty Indian, is operating in a mandatory industry and if the majority of the work is conducted
    • off the reserve, then coverage is mandatory.
    • on the reserve, then coverage is optional.

    The activity is assigned to the industry classification that best reflects that activity.

Industry or employer on reserve land

17 Carrying on of any industry or business by an Indian or an Indian band or bands on reserve land, including the management and operation of the band and band council.

(Where the industry or business is carried on by a corporation or partnership, the majority ownership must be held by an Indian or Indian band).
