Classification sub-group 201-02 - Mining, exploration and prospecting

• The development, construction and/or operation of mining of metal ores by either underground or surface mining. Includes gold, copper, zinc, tungsten, nickel, chromate and tantalum, and gems including diamonds.
• Incidental mining activities when carried on as part of an overall mining operation. These activities include:
  • Prospecting (by mine constructor/operator)
  • Line cutting
  • Diamond drilling
  • Blasting or setting off explosives
  • Shaft sinking to start or further develop a mine shaft
  • Drift/cross cutting (horizontal removal of rock/ore)
  • Crushing ore
  • Purification, reduction or smelting ore at the mine site
  • Removal of the overburden for strip or open pit mining
  • Raiseboring

• The operation of a stone/granite quarry is found under 202-03 – Drilling, quarries and peat moss.
• Construction-related blasting is found under 408-03 – Roadwork.

• The independent evaluation of prospective sites for:
  • Mineral exploration
  • Geological exploration
  • Geophysical exploration
  • Seismic exploration
  • Archeological exploration
  • Paleontological exploration

• Exploration with the use of diamond drills is found under 202-03 – Drilling, quarries and peat moss, and would include any incidental seismic exploration.
• Exploration or prospecting performed by an oil or gas company is found under 202-04 – Oil and gas wells

Prospecting is smaller-scale physical exploration of mineral and ore deposits.

• Line cutting (clearing right of way for exploration/sample taking) is considered incidental to the main operation.

• Mapping Services – where mapping services involve any outside field work.

• Mapping services exclusively done in an office environment (i.e., involving no field work), can be found under 704-08 – Designing, decorating and drafting.
