  • Inspection, testing and monitoring for industrial purposes, including:
    • Radiographic inspection related to industry (x-ray, gamma ray, ultra sound)
    • Air flow balancing and testing (in buildings)
    • Gas and water leakage inspecting pipelines(testing only – no maintenance)
    • Blasting – control consultants (seismic testing)
    • Air quality monitoring
    • Inspecting and testing transformers
    • Inspecting and testing railway equipment
    • Temperature testing and equipment calibration
    • Animal carcass grading at meat processing plants
    • Environmental testing (buildings and site inspections)
  • The operation of a testing laboratory for medical, bacteriological, environmental, metallurgical (metals), noise and vibration, pharmaceutical or similar purposes are found under 704-05 – Laboratories.
  • Testing facilities operated by a manufacturer to test their own products are incidental to the manufacturing operation and are classified accordingly.
  • Denture/dental labs or prosthetic labs are classified under 315-17 – Manufacturing dental, medical, jewellery and ceramic products.
  • Ground line inspection and treatment of power lines, including wooden hydro poles.
  • “In-the field” research and data collection, including:
    • Hydrogeology (soil testing in the field) non agricultural
    • Timber cruising – forest inventory (assess tree volume, type and surrounding ecosystem)
    • Water stewardship (gathering water samples for testing; surveying), by shore or by boat.
    • Wildlife measurements, including tagging, measuring, population counts, etc, of fish, birds or other wildlife
  • Independent home inspection services (not hired by construction firms).
  • Independent construction consultants or technicians (offer advice and/or references only) that do not hire or pay construction workers or sub-contractors.
  • Construction consultants, inspectors and estimators hired by a construction company are incidental to the construction company’s activities and are classified accordingly.
