Actors and entertainers are exempt from mandatory coverage.

Please refer to relevant exclusion excerpt from The Workers Compensation Act (the Act) under Regulation 169/2008 below.

  • Video production and/or distribution of motion pictures, animated films, television shows or commercials, instructional videos.

    All workers associated with the production behind the camera are included in coverage.

    Coverage for “front of the camera” workers (i.e., actors, extra’s, etc) and independent contractors (e.g. writers, directors, etc) is optional.

    (For information on the terms and conditions for Optional coverage for these individuals, refer to the Appendix “A” – Film and Television Companies of the administrative guidelines for WCB Policy 35.20.10, Classification of Employers into Industry Sectors and Sub-Groups.)

  • Production of radio shows or commercials.
  • Operation of a film exchange (distribution of motion pictures to theatres).
  • Music distribution
  • Music Men (or Disc Jockeys) – provide sound shows (which may include mobile light shows) for socials, weddings, parties, night clubs, restaurants or discotheques.
  • Karaoke operators
  • Operation of a recording studio.

    (All workers are covered with the exception of music arrangers.)
