May 11, 2026 (WINNIPEG) – The Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba (WCB) has returned excess funds to eligible employers and reinforced its commitment to strategic investments that support a system well-positioned for the future.
The WCB’s positive 2025 year-end financial performance reflects responsible stewardship, strong investment returns and careful oversight of the workers compensation system. Based on this financial position, the Board of Directors has approved a distribution of excess funds.
“The Board has taken a balanced approach that allows us to return $90 million to eligible employers while continuing to invest in the long-term strength of Manitoba’s workers compensation system,” says Colin S. Robinson, WCB Board Chair. “This includes ongoing investments in prevention initiatives, return to work supports and improvements to our business systems.”
Robinson notes that eligible employers received a credit towards their 2026 WCB premiums earlier this month.
The WCB remains focused on working collaboratively with our stakeholders to prevent workplace injuries and to help workers recover and safely return to work after incidents. To sustain this commitment, Robinson adds, “significant investment is planned for a multi-year strategy to address the prevention and impact of psychological injuries, continued expansion of access to high-quality training through the SAFE Work Manitoba Training Portal and improvements to the workers compensation system, so it remains strong, adaptable and prepared for the evolving needs of Manitoba’s workers and employers.”
Under its funding policy, the WCB maintains a reserve fund with a target funding ratio of 130 per cent to ensure long-term stability of the workers compensation system. Each year, the Board reviews the funding position relative to this target and may take action when the fund exceeds or falls below that level.
