SAFE Work Priorities

SAFE Work focuses on priority areas, as determined by research and statistics. Some key examples include:

Demographic Priorities

  • Youth – Research demonstrates youth suffer more workplace injuries than any other age demographic, so SAFE Work creates annual campaigns to focus on preventing injuries in the industries in which youth are most likely to work. These campaigns feature interactive webisodes to engage youth and help them learn to participate in their safety at work.
  • New Canadian workers – Because studies show new Canadian workers sometimes lack understanding of workplace safety, SAFE Work translates prevention materials in languages other than English and French to help bridge the communications barrier.
  • Employers – Keeping workers can be tough, but keeping them safe isn’t. SAFE Work is Good for Business helps employers, large and small, to implement health and safety programming to prevent injuries and illness.

Injury Priorities

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries – Sprains, strains and tears account for many workplace injuries in Manitoba. SAFE Work has developed resources targeted to preventing these injuries including demonstrative videos and the popular Back to Basics book.
  • Serious Injuries – SAFE is dedicated to reducing the number of serious injuries suffered by Manitoba workers. Targeted programs designed to help workers and employers prevent falls and other potentially life-threatening injuries help spread the word that all injuries – especially serious ones – are preventable.

Industry Priorities

  • Construction – SAFE Work offers many resources and programs to help keep construction sites SAFE and injury-free. In particular, the SAFE on Site partnership (with Manitoba Heavy Construction Association and Construction Safety Association of Manitoba) provides contractors with safety awareness and actively assists with the implementation of a positive safety culture.
  • Manufacturing –There are many hazards and risks which can exist in manufacturing environments, but that doesn’t still mean work shouldn’t hurt. SAFE Work provides prevention resources to keep workers safe in any industry.

Program Priorities

  • Engagement –SAFE Youth campaigns show great success in engaging Manitoba youth, demonstrating those who participate are less likely to believe workplace injuries are inevitable and more likely to speak to their supervisors about safety. SAFE Work now uses engagement pieces in other campaigns such as the SAFE Work Debate and Roofers Tie One On.
